Shattered Dream

*        *          *

As we were wearing off our supper,

nearly napping in a leathery recline

we

were startled quite abruptly back to wakefulness

by a terrible crashing sound above.

In full battle mode I attacked the steps

two and three at a time, I flew.

Cursed Door, away with you

Ripping nearly from its hinges I flung it wide

*

to see

upon the floor

a bloodied broken flag,

its bars of red and white co-mingled

in abundant decibels of rank confusion

But

Its stars still twinkle randomly.

Or have they changed somehow?

Do they forthwith mourn,

*

in now

a not so neon blue?

oh sad and broken flag

your shattered shards now lie askew

This once proud standard

shall never wave a new

shall never wave a new
